Description
A picturesque tidal creek meanders through Johns Island, the largest of South Carolina's numerous barrier islands. This particular scene would have been a common sight to Native Americans such as the Kiawah, Stono and Bohicket tribes who originally hunted, fished and lived along these creek banks. By the mid-1700's European settlers had driven out the Indians to build plantations for the production of rice as well as the highly prized blue dye, indigo. The island, in fact, gets its name from the place these European settlers came from in Barbados, St. John Parish.
