Description
The Heart Gate was designed by one of the world's most renowned Master Blacksmiths, Philip Simmons. Simmons, a descendant of slaves, designed, fabricated or repaired over 600 pieces of ironwork in Charleston, SC, during his 77 year career. In a city well-known for it decorative ironwork, his collection of artistry in iron is, by far, the most popular. This particular work, an entry gate to a garden behind St. John's Reformed Episcopal Church on Anson Street, where Simmons was a parishioner, was named Philip Simmons Park, and dedicated to Charleston's native blacksmith artist in 1991, several years prior to his death.
